Introduction to Power Systems and Smart Grids – 046042

The course presents basic concepts in electric energy conversion, and discusses the principles of power systems and networks from a modern perspective. The course has two main parts: one that discusses network elements, and one that presents a top-down approach for power networks design, discussing power flow and stability in power grids. The course also provides an introduction to smart power grids and renewable energy sources.

1)    Introduction to Energy Conversion. The energy challenges of our world.

2)    AC analysis of power networks. active and reactive powers. Energy conversion.

3)    Elements:  transmission lines, transformers, synchronous machines (generators)

4)    Power Flow &   Economic operation of power networks

5)    Introduction to power networks dynamics and control.

6)    Concepts of modern power networks and smart power grids – Integration of distributed sources and renewables.
